Layerin&#; Ain&#;t Just for Winter! Bolster Your Security With Layers of Protection

Typosquatting is a type of internet scam that relies on end users making mistakes, such as spelling errors or entering the wrong domain name when entering a websites URL. It is also commonly known as URL Hijacking. There are many motivations for a hijacker to take the Typosquatting approach to deceiving unsuspecting victims:

1) To redirect web traffic to their own or a competitor’s product.

2) Installing malware to infect the user’s machine, typically with ad-hosting pieces of malware.

3) Freeze the web browser for a fake Tech Support scam, scaring the user into calling a fake tech support number claiming the user has a virus infection. These scams potentially cost the users hundreds of dollars.

4) To steal user information by running a phishing scheme to mimic legitimate website.

5) Making revenue from the user clicking on advertisements (either in plain site or disguised as legitimate search links) on the Typosquat website.

6) To blackmail or strong-arm payment from the company they&#;re Typosquatting in order to force a purchase of the website from the Typosquatter.

A scammer who runs a Typosquat scam typically registers a website address with spelling close to the legitimate websites address. This is typically something simple like omitting a letter, adding a letter, or using a different Top Level Domain. For example if a user wants to go to our website, they may end up typing superaantispyware[dot]com with double a’s. This will end up showing a user a Typosquatting website such as this:

Another type of Typosquat scam would be due to the person improperly typing out the full URL, typing something like google [dot] om , rather than typing google [dot] com. In this instance, the person typing the .om domain would actually be viewing a page hosted on Oman&#;s Top Level Domain, rather than the basic .com domain. In some instances, large corporations will buy up as many associated domains as they can in order to prevent this type of mistake (Google, for example, has variants of their site containing multiple o&#;s and different Top Level Domains); however, not all companies have the foresight and/or money to do this.

It is easy to avoid falling prey to a Typosquatting scam. Here are a few easy things you can do to prevent this.

1) Never open links in emails from unexpected senders, and exercise caution when visiting sites you&#;re not familiar with.

2) Bookmark your favorite websites so you can easily access them.

3) Use a search engine like Google, Bing, or Yahoo when looking for a specific website if you are unsure about the spelling or if the business&#; website is the same as their name. Some car dealerships, for example, use dealer names or slogans as their website.

4) Double check the URL you are typing before loading the page

5) Make sure Real-Time Protection is turned on in SUPERAntiSpyware Professional

6) If you are starting a web-based business, consider buying multiple domains that are similar to your primary site to preemptively stop Typosquatters. Most domain registrars will offer bulk rates when you purchase more than one domain at a time.

While this type of attack is somewhat uncommon by today&#;s standards, it still happens every once in a while. By practicing safe browsing habits, keeping your web browsers up-to-date, and running regular scans of your machine, you should not be impacted by most of these types of attacks.

BleepingComputer Review:

SUPERAntiSpyware is a free anti-spyware program that offers excellent detections and quick removal of common infections. As malware is constantly evolving and new variants are released, there is not one particular security program that will be able to protect you from all threats.  Therefore it is important to have a variety of programs in your security toolbox that you can use to scan your computer for malware and aid you in their removal.  SUPERAntiSpyware is definitely one of the programs that you want to have at your disposal.

SUPERAntiSpyware has the ability to detect all types of malware, including Trojans, Backdoors, Worms, Rootkits, and viruses.  Though the free edition will remove any infection it finds, it does not offer advanced features such as real-time protection, scheduled scanning, and automatic updates of malware definitions. In order to activate these features, you will need to upgrade to their commercial Professional edition.

A tutorial on how to use SUPERAntiSpyware to remove infections from your computer can be found at the following link:

Pros

It removes cookies

Cons

It claims that cookies are dangerous

It claims that JDownloader is Malware because it's Installer contains potentially unwanted Software - meanwhile it's bundled with Google Chrome
If I wanted to install Google Chrome, I would download Google Chrome and not SUPERAntiSpyware

"SAS sucks worse than earlier version !!"

"SAS sucks worse than earlier version !!"

Pros

Originally I had version it was working fine, despite my having to reverse some of the changes made to services I specifically wanted ON or OFF (but then, Glary and CrapCleaner also do that to me all the time grrrrr).
A-t 1st SAS seemed very thoroughtheir updates of latest known threats are kept VERY current ( always adding many to their database even if I do a manual update 10x a day)

Cons

started flagging many safe programs/files as malware which were very obviously NOT,
SAS (v) started uninstalling bits of its files and moving them around
gets harder to update Database (manually)
eventually SAS (v) won't open at all.
Version won't run/install at ALL (on Win 7) (tried 3 fresh Downloads)
ERRORs when I try to run/i+nstall SAS are "program not compatible" ! what??? I have Win 7; even made sure of compatibility settings & tested out running SAS with XP and Vista compatibility."This vers is for an EARLIER WiNDOWS OS"

Summary

I haven't found any virus/mal/or spywareBefore DLing v I used IObit Uninstaller - did a total removal of all trace files from SAS (using my marvelous "EVERYTHING" tool I've used for decades (***a MUST HAVE for locating EVERYTHING***). I hunted for a newer version of SAS (v) but could NOT find reviews of it anywhere. I usually abandon the idea with no reviews to even give me a clue either way if it's worth this effort but NOW I'm really frustrated. I get the most insane ERRORs when I try to run SAS error msgs kept trying to say that this version of SAS is too OLD to run on WinWhat's up with this? the older version is supposedly new enough to work fine on W7, so why should a newer SAS require ulder/earlier WiN OS ? makes no sense! I haven't tried (OLDER SAS) v but really have wasted too much time on this quest already so I will just check back here in the future to see if any others had this issue and/or if there's a better version Meanwhile I still have a tiny hunch this problem (and a few other weird things lately) could POSSIBLY be partly microsoft's fault trying to push WIN 10 down my throat, despite all my little tricks to block it
I'm realizing it's rare to find places to even read reviews or get reliable DLs of anything anymore, without fighting off the "offers" & TRICKY "helpful" solutions (hijackings if you aren't careful and make one slight finger keystroke slip)adityagaur.com like it does here (CNET) more & more.

Pros

Used to be good, now dangerous.

Cons

This once great program has degenerated into horrible spiteware. Had occasion to restart my computer and a couple of things were blocked from loading, including my VOIP telephone while SAS decided to announce it's BS "new" version by taking over my browser and trying to weedle $10 out of me. It closed all of the tabs I had open on my Chrome browser AND deleted the history of those tabs completely, destroying hours of research. I don't want to hear any shoulda woulda coulda about it, the fact is that these greedy b*stards did this on purpose because I wouldn't choke up ten bucks. They need to be sued out of existance, but that won't be necessary since any company this desperate can't be long for this world anyway.

Pros

I can't think of any

Cons

I downloaded the SuperAntiSpyware Portable Scanner from the maker's site. When I tried to install it on my desktop, as it is allegedly portable, it said the folder already exists. Huh? So I ignored that and went ahead, and it installed about 15 separate files on my desktop, which I put in a new folder.
On the first scan it claimed it had found Ask Toolbar, which I am damn sure from other checks was not on my machine, and that is the only thing there allegedly was, the scan found nothing else at all.
When I then tried to delete SAS, it was supposed to be portable remember, the folder on my desktop would not go. I used Iobit Uninstaller on it and there was one .dll file left that would not budge, so I then had to install Emco MoveOnBoot. That got rid of it.
After that, Wise JetSearch turned up 10 SAS files left on my machine and Regedit found 15 entries.

Summary

An hour of my life wasted.

Updated on Jan 12,

Correction: It was Iobit Unlocker I used, not Uninstaller.

Works very wellnice interface with all I need to find right in front of me.

Cons

None that I know of.

Summary

I ran this free Super Anti-spyware program, doing a complete scan, took 15 minutes, and it found tracking cookies!! They were NOT in a place where CCleaner could find them, and it had no place to check off to look!
I had run Malwarebytes Anti-malware first, it found nothing. Then I decided to download/install the Super Anti-spyware. I will keep using both of theseboth are great.

Pros

Nabs more malware than anything else I have tried and have tried most of them. Easy to use, fast and unobtrusive. Daily updates to the threat adityagaur.com must use this in conjunction with an anti-virus scanner and a firewall. These are complementary rather than equivalent to each other. Your protection plan should also include cloning of your system at points where it is known clean.

Cons

None, really, but note there is no such thing as a flawless protection product. They all will miss something. Although I have never had this product overlook an intrusion some reviews suggest it may do so but that appears to be a rarity.

Summary

Get the paid-for version to enjoy all the great features. As noted in "Pros" this is not a substitute for a good anti-virus product but, rather, complementary.
