ArticlesEndNote: Transferring Windows EndNote libraries to a Macintosh (and vice-versa)

EndNote Libraries that are created on the Mac version of EndNote 8 or later or the PC version of EndNote 8 or later are compatible across platforms; they can even be shared over a mixed-platform network. With the database structure of EndNote 8, your libraries will not be backwardly compatible with older versions of EndNote. Version 8 and later databases are compatible with the EndNote 8 and later programs only. For more information on the EndNote 8 and later Library format, go EndNote: Version 8 and later's library compatibility with older versions.

To share a library, use the following steps.

EndNote X6 and later users:

If you are copying your own EndNote library from one of your computers to another computer (that does not have a library on it) and the library is the one you have set to Sync, there is a simple procedure you should use that does not require the transfer of files.

  1. Open EndNote on the new computer.
  2. Go to the File menu and choose "New". Name the new library and choose "Save".
  3. Go to the Tools menu and choose "Sync". Click ok (it may warn about merging, click ok on that message) and wait for it to finish the Sync to get the references on this computer.

Compressed Library Transfer

If all users are using EndNote X and later:

You can save your complete library (the EndNote library.enl file as well as its associated .Data folder and all of its contents) to a single compressed .enlx file in order to easily transfer your library. Note: This compressed library may only be opened with EndNote X or later.

To save to a compressed library file:

  1. Open the library in EndNote.
  2. EndNote X/X1: From the "File" menu, select "Send to" and then "Compressed Library."
EndNote X2 and later: From the "File" menu, select "Compressed library (.enlx)" and then "Create..."
  3. Use the file dialog to save to an EndNote Compressed Library (filename.enlx).

To restore a compressed library file:

  1. Use EndNote X or later to open the filename.enlx file, which will extract the .ENL file and the .Data folder to
the same folder where the .ENLX file is located.
  2. Use EndNote to open the filename.enl file as you normally would to use the library.

If all users are using EndNote 8 and later:

If you plan to email an EndNote 8 or later library to someone, you must send all of the files found in your library’s .Data folder. While you cannot attach an entire folder to an email, you can use a third party program (such as WinZip or StuffIt, or Windows Compressed folders) that can zip your library and .Data folder into a single file to send via email.

Windows to Macintosh for EndNote 7 and earlier:

  1. If you are on a network you can simply copy the library from the PC to the Macintosh. If the machines are not networked you can transfer the files via portable media (CD, floppy, zip disk, USB key drive, etc.) or you can email the file(s) to yourself.
  2. In the EndNote program on the Macintosh, choose Open from the File menu and select Open Library. As long as the library has the .enl extension, EndNote will display it.

Macintosh to Windows for EndNote 7 and earlier:

Any library created by the Mac version of EndNote (prior to version 8) can be used by EndNote for Windows. Version 8 and later databases are compatible with the EndNote 8 and later programs only. No conversion is necessary, however you should change the name of the library to include the .enl extension (for example, Medicine.enl).

  1. If you are on a network you can simply copy the library from the Mac to the PC. If the machines are not networked you can transfer the files via portable media (CD, floppy, zip disk, USB key drive, etc.) or you can email the file(s) to yourself.
  2. Start the EndNote program in Windows. (If you see a dialog prompting you for a reference library file, choose Cancel.)
  3. Select Open from the File menu, and choose Open Library. Under "Look in" navigate to the location of the library you want to open. If your library does not have the extension .enl or .lib it will not appear in the dialog. If that is the case, select All Files *.* from the file type list at the bottom of the dialog and you should be able to see your library.
  4. Select your library and click Open.

EndNote

Reference management software package

EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing essays and articles. It is produced by Clarivate Analytics (previously by Thomson Reuters).

Features[edit]

EndNote groups citations into "libraries" with the file extension *.enl and a corresponding *.data folder.

There are several ways to add a reference to a library: manually, or by exporting, importing, copying from another EndNote library, or connecting from EndNote. The program presents the user with a window containing a dropdown menu from which to select the type of reference they require (e.g., book, congressional legislation, film, newspaper article, etc.), and fields ranging from the general (author, title, year) to those specific to the kind of reference (abstract, author, ISBN, running time, etc.)

Most bibliographic databases allow users to export references to their EndNote libraries. This enables the user to select multiple citations and saves the user from having to manually enter the citation information and the abstracts. Some databases (e.g., PubMed) requires the user to select citations, select a specific format, and save them as .txt files. The user can then import the citations into the EndNote software. It is also possible to search library catalogs and free databases, such as PubMed, from within the EndNote software program itself.

If the user fills out the necessary fields, EndNote can automatically format the citation into any of over 2,000 different styles the user chooses. For example, listed below are some citations from Gray's Anatomy using several different styles:

Anthropos Gray, Henry
1910 Anatomy, descriptive and applied. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger. [18th ed.]
APA 5th Gray, H. (1910). Anatomy, descriptive and applied (18th ed.). Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger.
MLA Gray, Henry. Anatomy, Descriptive and Applied. 18th ed. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger, 1910.
New England J Medicine 1. Gray H. Anatomy, descriptive and applied. 18th ed. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger; 1910.

In Windows, EndNote creates a file with an *.enl extension, along with a *.data folder containing various MySQL files with *.myi and *.myd extensions. EndNote can be installed so that its features, like Cite While You Write, appear in the Tools menu of Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org Writer.

EndNote can export citation libraries as HTML, plain text, Rich Text Format, or XML. From version X.7.2, one library can be shared with up to 14 other EndNote users. The data is synchronized via the EndNote cloud service, with everybody having full write access to the library.[3]

EndNote can also organize PDFs on the user's hard drive (or full text on the web) through links to files or by inserting copies of PDFs. It is also possible to save a single image, document, Excel spreadsheet, or other file type to each reference in an EndNote library. Starting from EndNote X version 1.0.1, formatting support for OpenDocument files (ODT) using the Format Paper command is supported.

Legal dispute with Zotero[edit]

In September 2008, Thomson Reuters, the owners of EndNote, sued the Commonwealth of Virginia for US$10 million and requested an injunction against competing reference management software.[4][5]George Mason University's Center for History and New Media had developed Zotero, a free/open-source extension to Mozilla Firefox. Thomson Reuters alleges that the Zotero developers reverse engineered and/or decompiled EndNote, that Zotero can transform proprietary EndNote citation style files (.ens) to the open Citation Style Language format, that they host files converted in this manner, and that they abuse the "EndNote" trademark in describing this feature. Thomson Reuters claims that this is violation of the site license agreement. They also added a restrictive click-thru license to their styles download web site.[5] George Mason University responded that it would not renew its site license for EndNote, that "anything created by users of Zotero belongs to those users, and that it should be as easy as possible for Zotero users to move to and from the software as they wish, without friction."[6] The journal Nature editorialized that "the virtues of interoperability and easy data-sharing among researchers are worth restating. Imagine if Microsoft Word or Excel files could be opened and saved only in these proprietary formats, for example. It would be impossible for OpenOffice and other such software to read and save these files using open standards — as they can legally do."[7] The case was dismissed on June 4, 2009.[8]

EndNote Web[edit]

EndNote Web, a web-based implementation of EndNote, offers integration with the ISI Web of Knowledge.[9]

Import format[edit]

Endnote can import records from other databases or text files. These files need to be formatted in a format that Endnote can process. The following example shows three records ready for import as a text file. Such files normally use the file extension .enw.
